welcome to the peninsula maternity trust
We are the fundraising entity for Mowbray Maternity Hospital and its associated Midwife Obstetric Units. We raise funds for projects which improve on, and provide quality medical services and obstetric and neonatal health care at one of the most important public health facilities in the country.
Our Vision: To support a world class maternal and neonatal health care facility – the Mowbray Maternity Hospital.
Our Mission: To raise funds to ensure that Mowbray Maternity Hospital can provide the best facilities and the best equipment for mothers and newborn babies.
The name of the Peninsula Maternity Trust reflects our heritage of healthcare. Mowbray Maternity Hospital is built on the site of the Wheatfields Nursing home which opened its doors in 1916. The Peninsula Maternity Hospital in District Six was amalgamated with Mowbray Maternity Hospital in 1992. Midwife Obstetric Units (MOU’s)across Cape Town have been operational since 1974, supported and managed within the Peninsula Maternal and Neonatal Services (now Metropole West) which integrates primary, secondary and tertiary levels of care between the MOU’s, secondary hospitals (including Mowbray Maternity) and Groote Schuur.
Until 1990 the Hospital provided maternity services to private and public patients. Mowbray Maternity Hospital is now almost exclusively a public maternity health care facility.
“I cannot change the world for everyone but I can make a difference to the world of one person. Healthy mothers and babies are one of the best indicators of a healthy, caring, and meaningful society.”
