mowbray maternity hospital

Mowbray Maternity Hospital is the largest dedicated maternity hospital in South Africa. Currently approximately 38,000 births occur annually in public hospitals in the Metropole West region of the Western Cape. Some 10,500 occur at Mowbray Maternity Hospital, which is almost 1,000 per month.

The Hospital offers subsidised health care to pregnant mothers and their newborn infants. 98% of the patients admitted to Mowbray Maternity Hospital have no access to private health care; specialised maternity care is therefore made available to patients from a broad spectrum of the community and from predominantly disadvantaged backgrounds.

Geographically patients come from the local area surrounding the Hospital, as well as from the Midwife Obstetric Units (MOU’s) in Gugulethu, Mitchells Plain, False Bay and Retreat (which serves the communities of Ocean View, Hout Bay, Fishhoek). In addition, the MOU’s in Khayelitsha, Vanguard and Hanover Park refer ill pregnant women and ill and/or preterm newborn babies to Mowbray Maternity if their own referral hospitals (Groote Schuur and New Somerset) are full. Mowbray Maternity also provides outreach in the form of regular visits by Obstetric and Neonatal doctors to all these MOU’s, which are run by midwives.

A number of patients also commute from the Eastern Cape and Northern Cape specifically to benefit from the quality of services offered at Mowbray Maternity Hospital.

Mowbray Maternity Hospital is regarded by healthcare professionals and users of the service as being the premier public service provider of neonatal and obstetric services in the country.

“Mowbray Maternity Hospital has a proud history of the finest neonatal and obstetric care. It is our duty to ensure that the Hospital offers modern facilities and state-of-the-art equipment. The Centenary Campaign will fundraise for the needs of the Hospital. The Peninsula Maternity Trust has our full support to achieve these ambitions.”

Mr Hans Human, Chief Executive Officer, Mowbray Maternity Hospital
