Staff Support Projects

Several projects have been identified by the Hospital to support staff. A list of these projects follow; more details are available on request.

p1

Staff tearoom and facilities

The dedication and devotion of the Hospital staff is clearly apparent, having been referred to as “angels” by many patients. They work extremely hard and deserve to be comfortable during their lunch and tea breaks. Comfortable tearoom facilities will contribute to the general wellbeing of the staff, which out of respect the Hospital would like to provide. This would include comfortable chairs, kettles, toasters and microwaves creating a supportive and cheerful environment. Another staff facility which needs to be developed is a resource centre. IT infrastructure (hardware and software) is required for interns and health professionals to search for medical/nursing articles and have access to e-learning whilst at the Hospital.

Crèche for staff children

Staff often struggle to find suitable child-minders/day mothers or a crèche which is conveniently situated for them to drop their children off before commencing duty at 07h00. Most crèches only open at 07h00 and the nursing staff is expected to be on duty at that time.

A crèche will result in staff being on duty on time, as well as reduce absenteeism due to staff not having someone to take care of their children whilst at work. An unused space at the Hospital with garden, ablutions and security has been earmarked for refurbishment into a crèche; accommodating at least 30 children. The Peninsula Maternity Trust is enquiring about the establishment of a credited ECD centre for this facility. Resourcing the crèche with staff, furnishings, play equipment and learning materials is required.
